Mustang Promises
April of 2012, a stunning wild mustang stallion captures the imagination of a woman, and so began a life altering journey with wild horses... who is this woman that has changed everything in her life since she met that stallion many years ago!?!
Honestly, sometimes I wonder that myself, I have lived a little bit of many places, I grew up on a ranch with horses in northern Idaho, then spent half of my life in bigger metro areas like Seattle and Detroit, I have worked office jobs and political campaigns, I have partied in bars and hiked rocky mountain ridges. And never once did I imagine myself living the life I do today - and I cannot imagine now ever doing anything else other than what I am doing right now - fighting to keep wild horses alive and healthy in their wild places of high sage filled desert and tree scattered mountains!!
We moved to Wyoming in December 2010 and I saw wild mustangs on the range a few months later while on a road trip... that was it for me, I started researching, trying to find out more, trying to find how to find them, and hours driving back to that exact spot along the highway hoping to see those horses again.
It was disturbingly difficult to find info on mustangs those many years ago, if it were not for running into some locals I may never have really figured it out. And the issues were a mystery to me, as you probably already know, googling wild horses will bring up a lot of different information, and then you are left with trying to figure out who is right or wrong, who is telling the truth or lying, who is REALLY fighting for the wild mustang and who is pretending while playing a game that will ultimately see them removed from their wild lands.
Many years later and here I am.... after years of photographing, documenting, falling in love with and having my heart shattered for the love of a mustang, I am the crazy woman who stubbornly keeps fighting in the best ways I can find for the wild ones that saved my life - saved it in the way of reminding me how to be wild, showing me that they are strong and resilient beyond the understanding of man, and required of me to do something more than just take pretty images that hang on a wall.
Each of my images tell a story... there is a moment in each of them that is a story between me and the horse, one that is shared because the worth of that horses is beyond any great monetary wealth, and their story needs to be told - and I still wonder at how I am the one that Romeo chose that day to share his heart and life.
That is me and this is who I am.... the girl who fell so madly deeply in love with a wild mustang stallion, that even in the darkest of days, remembers a promise to never give up fighting for those mustangs of the wild and desolate, but always stunningly gorgeous, sage-filled high deserts of Wyoming.
