BLM & Mustang Slang, Terms, and Abbreviations
Whether you are new or been around a while it can sometimes be a little bit confusing trying to know and keep straight the jargon in this world of mustangs, so we are sharing some of the most common ones, and will add to the list as we think of more, or when someone lets us know it needs to be added to the list:
1. BLM - Bureau of Land Management
2. HMA - Herd Management Area
* an assigned area for mustangs where they exist naturally and were found at the time of the of the 1971 Wild Horse and Burro act
3. HA - Herd Area
* an area that wild horses are known to cross through and mingle together in the same area as assigned HMAs but does not have the same protected status as an HMA and are frequently zeroed out for management of mustangs
4. AML - Appropriate Management Level
* a minimum / maximum number of horses allowed in an HMA as stated by BLM
5. AUM - Animal Unit Month
* the amount of forage needed to sustain one cow and calf, one horse, or five sheep or goats for one month
