So you know mustangs are real.... you know they live in places like Wyoming and Colorado - but how do you find them?!? I am so incredibly lucky to live where the furthest HMA with wild mustangs is 60 minutes from my home. I know how to find them in all of the Wyoming HMAs {Herd Management Areas}, but not that long ago I only knew a few of the places where I could enjoy the company of wild horses. I got lost a LOT!! Seriously.... I got lost in places I do not even know how to find again.
There are many that know where or how to find the wild ones.... there are some that hold that knowledge like a deep dark CIA kind of secret that only the 'trusted and worthy' should be shared with - I much prefer to be open and share information, because what exactly qualifies someone as 'trusted' or 'worthy'??? Ooohh, don't get me wrong... there are definitely people I don't want to share the places or the wild ones; people that wish them harm, people that do not understand or respect their worth in the same way as I do, people that I just don't really like (hey I am only human) - but it is not up to me who spends time out in the wild places with wild horses in their land - wild lands that belong to all American citizens. That is really up to them.... the mustangs, the ones untouched by man, because regardless of who is going out there, or their purpose or motives or personality, the horses decide if and when to give them that moment in time, a chance to know wild horses as they are in the wild, to learn from wild mustangs the things they know, and the chance (and choice) to be better humans.
Most people are curious about wild horses, fascinated by the wildness of mustangs, that they live in these vast rugged territories, and often are willing to learn about them and their wild life - and we want to encourage all who have that curiosity!! So here are a few links with information about wild mustangs, their home lands, and where you can visit them! They are not my personal links but reasonably good information as starting points for your own journey with the wild ones in their wild lands. Please always remember to be mindful that while it often seems you are the only one out there, you are not the first and will not be the last, leave the land as pristine - or better - as you found it... and learn to recognize private property and do not trespass into places that are someone else's lands.
BLM list and links to each HMA:
https://www.blm.gov/programs/wild-horse-and-burro/herd-management/herd-management-areas - all states with HMAs are listed, you can click on the state you are interested in, and then from the HMA list of that state, click on the HMA you want to learn more about, and you will find a brief description of the area's range and the mustangs that are in that HMA.
American Wild Horse Campaign map of HMA locations:

These are shareable public links that anyone can access.... and while these are generalized maps and limited information pieces, I am happy to share more detailed info about WY HMAs - just message me what you want to know!
